Foreign Christian Workers Expelled

Last year, about 35 foreign Christian workers were expelled from Turkey as their permits were either revoked or denied renewal. This year, about 16 had been forced to leave the country.

The latest of those workers are Joy Subaşıgüller and Pastor Zach Balon, both from the United States. On June 5th, Joy was told that her residency permit had been revoked, even though she has resided in Turkey for nearly ten years and is married a Turkish pastor named Lütfü. The couple, who have three young children (all Turkish citizens), have appealed against the revocation.

Pastor Zach Balon is pastor of the New Hope Church in Istanbul. He was about to fly on a trip with his family on June 24th when he was told that he wouldn’t be allowed to return to Turkey once he left. He immediately cancelled the flight and filed an appeal.

In these cases, and so many others, the notified Christians all had the necessary legal documentation and visas, yet they were subjected to deportation.

Pray that the appeals presented to the courts on behalf of the believers requesting to remain in the country will be successful, and they will be able to continue their ministry in Turkey.

Pray that God will bless the past, present and future outreaches of the church throughout Turkey, so that many more names will be added to the Lamb’s “Book of Life” (Revelation 13:8; 20:15).

Church Leader Held Without Charges Because of COVID-19

Pastor Phong was detained in early March 2020 after refusing to renounce his faith in Christ.  About 130 Christians live in Phong’s village.  The believers were asked to turn in all their Bibles, hymnbooks and other Christian materials and renounce their faith in Christ.

Pray for pastor Phong and his family as they endure the separation and uncertainty. Pray that they will not be fearful but will remain strong in their faith in Christ. Pray that pastor Phong will not be charged but will be released soon.

Pray that those opposing the gospel will come to salvation in the Lord.

Propaganda Film Leads Defector to Christ

Mrs An was not a Christian when she was arrested in China as a North Korean defector, but she did know how to pray. She learnt about prayer through an anti-Christian propaganda film she watched while still in North Korea.

She remembered seeing Christians praying in the film, and when she was in her Chinese jail cell, she noticed someone had scratched the name Jesus on the wall. Desperate for help, Mrs An decided to ask the Christians’ God to help her get to South Korea.Later, after successfully reaching South Korea, she sought out Christians who taught her to grow in faith. Mrs An is now learning how to witness to her family, co-workers and others around her.

Pray that Mrs An will continue to grow in her understanding and knowledge of God and His ways. Pray for strength and perseverance to overcome any challenges in her new life in South Korea.

Pray that her testimony will touch many lives and convict them to turn to God in repentance and salvation.

Christian Families Expelled From Village

Two Christian families were expelled from their Laotian village after declaring their faith in Christ.

When the Mua family became Christians, village leaders stated clearly that their village will not cooperate or associate with those that take on the “Jesus religion”, and that they disliked the Christians coming to tell others about Jesus. After the Mua family led six more people from another family to Christ, village leaders ordered all of them to leave the village by the end of April 2020.

VOM contacts found 10 of these believers camped beside the main road leading into the village, provided them with temporary housing, and are now helping them to find a permanent solution. We thank God for the willingness of these believers to give up everything they owned for the sake of Christ.

Pray that these faithful believers will be able to find permanent accommodation. Pray that they will find divine providence for their every need, and experience the peace of God despite their challenging circumstances.

Pray that many more villagers will be blessed and receive salvation through the testimony of these believers.

Do share this prayer request.

Father Expels and Threatens Sons for Attending Church

A teenager and his younger brother, Chan and Huang, were attending a church service outside Vientiane on May 24th, when their father burst in and began swearing and cursing at them. He told them to stop worshipping and go home. Members of the congregation had to prevent the boys’ father from hitting them.

The boys were then thrown out of the house and had to seek refuge at the home of their pastor. The boys’ father continued to threaten them and painted threats on their family home saying, “ I do not want to see you at all, heed this if you do not want to die! The boys stayed with a Voice of the Martyrs’ supported evangelist for several weeks until their father demanded they return to help him plant rice.

Please pray for reconciliation between the boys and their father.

Pray that the father will have a personal encounter with the Lord and receive salvation.
